In roofing, the standard unit of measurement is the square, which equals 100 square feet of finished roof surface. Shingles, underlayment, and other materials are typically priced and packaged by the square, so converting your roof into squares is the first step in any estimate.
To find squares you need the actual surface area of the roof, not just the footprint of the house. A steeper roof covers the same ground area but presents a larger sloped surface, which means more material. This is why two houses with identical floor plans can require very different quantities of shingles.

Always round up to the next whole square when ordering, because partial squares are not sold. It is also wise to keep a spare bundle or two for future repairs, since dye lots can vary and an exact color match years later is not guaranteed.
Roof pitch is the ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run, usually expressed as rise over 12 inches. A 6-in-12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. Because a sloped surface is longer than the flat ground beneath it, you must scale the footprint area up by a pitch multiplier to get true surface area.

The multiplier grows with steepness. A low-slope roof barely exceeds its footprint, while a steep 12-in-12 roof needs roughly 41% more surface material than the flat area suggests. The table below lists common multipliers you can use directly.

Shingles are sold in bundles, and several bundles make up a square. The number of bundles per square depends on the shingle type. Standard three-tab shingles usually require 3 bundles per square, while heavier architectural shingles may need 3 to 4 bundles depending on the manufacturer.
After computing your squares and bundles, add a waste allowance for cuts, valleys, hips, and mistakes. A flat, simple roof may need only about 10% extra, while a roof with many dormers, hips, and valleys can need 15% or more. Skipping the waste factor is the most common cause of mid-job material shortages.
