Estimate Bricks, Mortar & Cement for Any Wall

How many bricks for that wall? And how much mortar? Enter wall dimensions and brick size — get brick count, mortar volume, and cement bags. 5% waste included.

Brick Mortar Mix Ratios: Type N, S & M Explained

Choosing the right mortar mix is critical for wall strength and durability. Below is a comparison of the three standard ASTM mortar types and their recommended applications.

Mortar TypeMix Ratio (C:L:S)Min PSIBest ForFrost Resistance
Type N1:1:6750General above-grade walls, veneers, chimneysModerate
Type S1:0.5:4.51,800Below-grade, retaining walls, foundationsHigh
Type M1:0.25:32,500Heavy-load, retaining walls, manholesVery High
Type O1:2:9350Interior non-load-bearing, repointing onlyLow

For most residential brick walls, Type N mortar is the standard choice. Use Type S for any wall below grade or exposed to freeze-thaw cycles. Type M is reserved for heavy structural loads. The lime content in Type N improves workability and reduces cracking during curing, making it easier for DIY bricklayers to achieve solid joints.

Brick Wall Cost Estimation: Material, Labor, and Total Project Budget

Building a brick wall involves costs beyond just bricks — mortar, reinforcement, labor, and foundation all contribute. This table provides a comprehensive cost breakdown for common wall sizes.

Wall SizeBricks NeededMortar (bags)Material CostLabor CostTotal Estimated Cost
4x8 ft (Small garden wall)5004$350$600$950
6x10 ft (Retaining wall)9507$650$1,200$1,850
8x12 ft (Privacy wall)1,50011$1,050$2,000$3,050
10x20 ft (Property boundary)3,20024$2,240$4,500$6,740
12x30 ft (Large perimeter wall)5,80044$4,060$8,000$12,060

Labor typically accounts for 60-65% of the total brick wall cost. Material costs vary significantly by brick type: common bricks ($0.50-1.00 each), face bricks ($1.00-3.00 each), and engineered bricks ($2.00-5.00 each). For a typical garden wall, budget $25-40 per square foot installed. Adding reinforcement (rebar in footings) adds 10-15% to the total cost but significantly improves structural integrity. How to Calculate Bricks for a Wall: Step by Step

The brick calculation formula is simple once you account for the mortar joints — the joints, not the bricks, decide how many you need. Here is the method bricklayers actually use on a wall estimate:

  1. Measure the wall area. Multiply wall length by height. Example: a 20 ft × 8 ft garden wall = 160 sq ft.
  2. Subtract openings. Doors count as roughly 21 sq ft, windows as 15 sq ft. A wall with one window: 160 − 15 = 145 sq ft.
  3. Compute one brick's footprint with its joints. A standard modular brick is 7⅝ × 2¼ in, but with ⅜ in mortar joints each unit occupies about 8 × 2⅝ in — roughly 16.7 sq in, or 0.116 sq ft.
  4. Divide area by footprint. 145 ÷ 0.116 ≈ 1,250 bricks for a single-wythe (one brick thick) wall.
  5. Add waste. Breaks and cuts run 5% on straight walls, 10% or more with piers, arches, or many bonds — so order 1,315–1,375.

For a double-wythe wall, double the count. If you work in metric: a 215 × 65 mm brick with 10 mm joints occupies about 225 × 75 mm, which works out to almost exactly 60 bricks per square meter of single-wythe wall — a number worth memorizing for quick checks. Enter your wall dimensions above to get the exact figure instead of a rule-of-thumb.
